Spiritual Direction with Barbara Lewis

barbaralewis

The Rev. Barbara Lewis

After having gotten her A.B degree from Mt. Holyoke College, the Rev. Barbara Lewis earned her Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University. Completing a seven-year course of study and practice, she was granted a certificate in psychoanalysis from the National Psychological Association of Psychoanalysis. Barbara practiced psychoanalysis and psychotherapy for 25 years in Manhattan, before moving to Pennsylvania and becoming first an Episcopal Deacon for seven years; then, educated at Princeton Seminary in New Jersey and General Seminary in New York, she was ordained an Episcopal priest. She moved to Houston in 1999 and has served at Lord of the Streets Church, St.Thomas Church in Nassau Bay, Grace Church, Alvin, and, most recently, St. Andrew’s in the Heights, from which she retired as rector after seven years in April, 2013.

Barbara is now offering spiritual direction at the Institute for Spirituality and Health. She sees it as a relationship which seeks to nurture and deepen one’s connection with God. People come to a spiritual director in times of transition to help clarify a sense of what God might be calling them to do; in times of pain and suffering in their spiritual life; or during a time of seeking a deeper sense of the divine in their lives. People may meet with a spiritual director for a period of months, or continue in spiritual direction for many years. Although some spiritual directors charge for their ministry, many, including Barbara, do not. Generally, people meet with a spiritual director once –or sometimes, for a period, more often – each month. Barbara has worked with people from a variety of faith traditions: Protestants, Episcopalians, Roman Catholics, Jews, and with people of no formal religious background or affiliation.

Psychotherapy and Dream Work with Jerry Ruhl

Jerry Ruhl, PhD

Jerry Ruhl, PhD

I am an experienced and trusted therapist and teacher based in Houston. I take a depth approach to psychology that accepts and values unconscious aspects of human experience, the mysterious and unseen as well as rational and goal-directed thoughts and behaviors. It is essential that you feel welcome, safe, heard and understood—not judged or criticized. Collaboratively, we will explore limiting habits, patterns, and fears that keep you stuck and dissatisfied. The length and direction of therapy is related to the complexity of problems and your individual needs. I will meet you where you are, not impose a particular therapeutic model. My approach puts no limits on the person you can become.

I’m also the author of books and articles on psychology and spirituality, including Living Your Unlived Life: Coping with Unrealized Dreams and Fulfilling Your Purpose in the Second Half of Life. You can find some of my writing here, and you can subscribe to receive updates from me. As a speaker and teacher, I’m also available to lead workshops and speak at events.
