Welcome to the Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center. The Institute is dedicated to the concept that all humans are spiritual beings and that one’s spirituality plays a vital role in health and in healing. Formed in 1955 as the Institute of Religion, on May 4, 2015 we began our 60th Diamond Anniversary Year.
ISH’s mission is to increase awareness of the relationship spirituality plays in health and in healing. We fulfill this mission through Education, Research, and Direct Service projects. Our educational work is composed of conferences, panel discussions and monthly talks on subjects related to spirituality and health. We host annual conferences for both mental health professionals and nurses, as well as bi-annual workshops for Baylor College of Medicine PA and medical students. We have also completed a number of research projects including a survey of the spiritual practices of physicians in Harris County and a study on the use of yoga and meditation in treatment of teenagers with Bipolar Disorder in conjunction with Texas Children’s Hospital. Finally, we are working in collaboration with such organization as the Women’s Home and Bo’s Place to provide direct services to vulnerable populations in our community.
We have an outstanding Board of Trustees, Adjunct Faculty, and Staff. Cruise through our website and be sure to look at the events page to find a list of our major conferences, seminars, and panel discussions on timely subjects. Our staff is available to speak in churches, synagogues and mosques, as well as civic groups and organizations that address health issues. Next March 4-6, 2016, ISH will host the Conference on Medicine and Religion in Houston at the JW Marriott hotel on Westheimer Rd. at the Galleria.
Our Third Annual “Gathering of Friends” luncheon will held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at River Oaks Country Club. Receiving our “Caring Heart” award this year will be Texas Children’s Hospital and the surgical team that separated the Mata Conjoined Twins. All who attend the luncheon will be blessed. We welcome your interest and participation in the work of the Institute by your presence at our events and by your financial giving. Contributions of any size are tax deductible and appreciated.
Please know you are most welcome to visit our 8100 Greenbriar office where gated parking is always free. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you.
